Tjeerdema Aquatic Toxicology AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY Lab

UC Davis

Our Mission

Welcome! The mission of the Tjeerdema Research Group is to produce new information on the environmental fate and toxic actions of pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, oil dispersants and natural toxins in marine and freshwater systems and organisms. Research generally falls under one of the following categories:

  The metabolic actions of naturally-dispersed versus chemically-dispersed oil in marine organisms using NMR-based metabolomics (environmental metabolomics)

  The dissipation of pesticides in flooded rice field conditions via volatilization, soil sorption, photodegradation and microbial degradation

  The toxicokinetics and biotransformation of pesticides and petroleum hydrocarbons in fishes and invertebrates

  The influence of oil dispersants on the bioavailability of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine systems;

  The fate and toxic actions of pesticides and petroleum hydrocarbons in marine and freshwater sediments

  The development and application of sensitive early life stage bioassays for  assessment of sediment and effluent toxicity.

Research activities are centered at the Department of Environmental Toxicology, the Marine Pollution Studies Laboratory near Monterey (a jointly operated UCD-Department of Fish & Game facility), the UCD NMR Facility, Bodega Marine Laboratory and the Centre for Marine Environmental Research & Innovative Technology (MERIT) at the University of Hong Kong.

Doctoral students emphasizing in environmental toxicology are members of one of the following graduate groups: Agricultural & Environmental Chemistry, Ecology or Pharmacology & Toxicology.
